What are the applications of xanthan gum in other daily chemical products
Xanthan gum is a high molecular weight polymer composed of D-glucose D-mannose D-glucuronic acid, acetic acid, and pyruvate. Its structure is shown in Figure 1. Xanthan gum, also known as Hansheng gum or Xanthomonas polysaccharide.
Xanthan gum is a biological fermentation chemical developed successfully in the 1960s in the United States. The Department of Biology at Nankai University in China first isolated a batch of xanthan gum strains in 1979, and subsequently conducted research on stepwise fermentation. At present, xanthan gum has been industrialized and produced in China, with a total production capacity of 2000t/a. It has been applied in industries such as fire drilling mud and food.
Cleaning agent
The thixotropic properties of xanthan gum allow cleaning agents to adhere to the surface of long vertical dirt for a long time, allowing surfactants with cleaning effects to better exert their effects. In addition, by utilizing the stability and viscosity enhancement of xanthan gum towards strong acids and bases, industrial acidic and alkaline cleaning agents can also be manufactured.
Polishing agent
Due to its ability to provide solid suspension, xanthan gum can be used as a shoe polish. In addition, in the polishing agents for silver and brass vessels, xanthan gum can suspend and grind abrasives. In wax polishing agents, xanthan gum can make the emulsification process more stable.
Deodorants
Mixing water-soluble resins such as xanthan gum, dextrin, and CMC soaked in spices with high water absorbent resins can produce deodorants that absorb water and emit a fragrant aroma, while also reducing the odor.
At present, the annual production of xanthan gum in the world is about 50000 tons, and the annual production is increasing at a rate of 8%. Due to its multifunctional properties, xanthan gum can produce two or more functions simultaneously in the same product, making it a fine chemical with great market potential and promising production and development prospects. With the maturity of production technology for xanthan gum in China and the improvement of product quality, the application of xanthan gum in the daily chemical industry will also be developed.
